Is there anything more frustrating than when other drivers fail to use their turn signal? Perhaps not.
Is the driver rude or just lazy? Whatever the reason, failing to signal a turn can be more than just a nuisance — it can cause serious car accidents, injuries, even death.
Every state has a law requiring that all drivers must use a directional signal to indicate when they are changing lanes, turning, or passing another vehicle. Despite this law, improper or neglected turn signals cause approximately two million car accidents a year nationwide.
A recent study concluded that 71% of drivers age 18 to 24 don’t use signals. One out of four drivers failed to use a signal and 57% admitted to not using signals on a regular basis.
A lack of signaling commonly leads to a vehicle being sideswiped, t-boned, or rear-ended.
Because failure to signal doesn’t give other drivers the proper amount of time to react, accidents are more likely. If an accident does occur, the driver who failed to signal is liable and should be held accountable for their actions.
In such cases, a car accident attorney should be consulted.
