Walking is becoming an increasingly popular mode of transportation, especially in cities. However, that also means an increase in serious car accidents involving pedestrians.
Here are three of the most common causes of pedestrian accidents and how you can actively avoid them.
1. Texting
Texting can cause accidents from both the driver and pedestrian ends. Drivers who are texting may not notice pedestrians in the crosswalk, and texting pedestrians may not take the time to look both ways. If you have to answer that text right now, be sure to stop walking or pull over first.
2. Ignoring Crosswalk Signals
Most crosswalks have signals and clear markings, but sometimes pedestrians ignore such signals. Always make sure to only cross in marked areas and obey “walk” and “stop” signals.
3. Left-Hand Turns
Left-hand turns are common pedestrian accident situations. Drivers are concentrating on navigating the intersection and pedestrians often forget to look both ways.
