One of the first things that comes to most people’s minds when they think of summer is cooling off by swimming in a nearby pool, lake, or pond.
According to the U.S. Census, swimming ranks third in popularity of sports activities. However, it’s vital to practice swimming safety to avoid a terrible accident that can turn your fun into tragedy.
Below are several swimming safety tips suggested by the American Red Cross:
- Never swim while under the influence of alcohol. This can inhibit your decision making abilities.
- Stay hydrated with water while out in the sun.
- Always swim in a designated area where there are lifeguards. If there are no lifeguards, make sure you aren’t swimming alone. The buddy system while swimming is important.
- Keep an eye on small children when they’re in or near a body of water. Make sure they have the necessary life vests or swim gear to protect them.
- If you own a pool, install a barrier around the pool to protect children, pets, and the elderly from accidentally falling into the water.
- Make sure you and all family members know how to swim and have taken appropriate swimming lessons.
- Don’t horseplay by pushing or shoving in the water. People can hit their heads and cause serious accidents due to this type of activity.
- Never jump in unfamiliar water, especially if you’re unable to see the bottom. People have become paralyzed from hitting rocks and other objects that they weren’t able to see.
- Never dive into shallow water.
- Always wear sunscreen to protect your skin from dangerous UV rays.
Following these safety tips will help ensure endless summer swimming fun.
