Every year, thousands of Americans lose their lives due to a job-related accident that often times could have been avoided had proper safety measures been in place. Hopefully, you work for an employer that deems safety a high priority. However, this is not the case for many. There are several tips to consider in order to keep yourself as safe as possible while on the job.
Receive Proper Instruction
First, make sure you understand exactly how to operate certain types of machinery. Your employer should train you and also educate you on safety measures. This may not occur and it is up to you to ask questions and make them aware that you want to know exactly what you need to do, how to do it and all the while remaining safe.
Wear Safety Gear
Next, you should wear any safety equipment necessary when performing certain jobs. If you are a construction worker, let your employer know you need a hard hat and steel toed shoes. If you are asked to perform a job that is highly dangerous, consider telling them you are not comfortable with this job because you value your life!
Stretch and Take Breaks
Thirdly, watch out for repetitive motion types of jobs that could cause harm. Carpal tunnel is an issue for many that type all day. Taking appropriate breaks and giving your wrists the rest they need is important. If you sit all day at a computer, stretch your back, legs and give your eyes a rest.
Sleep
Lastly, it is up to you to get the adequate amount of sleep per night that is needed to perform properly at work. WebMD states that “Studies show that sleep loss and poor-quality sleep also lead to accidents and injuries on the job. In one study, workers who complained about excessive daytime sleepiness had significantly more work accidents, particularly repeated work accidents. They also had more sick days per accident.”
Always do your part to be as safe as you can be on the job. However, if you believe that you or a family member has been injured on the job due to lack of appropriate safety measures taken by your employer, contact an experienced workers’ compensation attorney immediately to learn about how you may qualify to be compensated for your injuries and loss of time at work.
