Although their definitions seem similar on the surface, there are actually several differences between torts and crimes.
Torts, simply put, deal with areas of the law that govern whether or not an individual should be held responsible for the injuries or other sorts of damages to another person. These damages could cover medical expenses, lost wages, emotional damage, etc. Tort disputes are settled in civil court settings.
Crimes, on the other hand, deal with individuals who have committed crimes against society rather than simply an individual person. In other words, the federal or state government have labeled certain actions to be crimes. Unlike torts, crimes are settled in criminal court settings and compensation is not received in criminal cases unless a party decides to sue.
